Gender Reveal! Why I Don't Have that Beloved Party.

“Are you having a boy or a girl??”

That’s a question I hear all the time. I guess it’s just the natural thing to ask a pregnant woman.

When someone asks me that question, I say, “It’s either a boy or a girl”.  And that’s it.

I was pressured by one of my best friends, Waverley, to find out the sex of our first baby.  I had no intentions of EVER finding out if I was having a boy or a girl because it just seemed like so much fun to wait and see.  But Waverley was so pushy!  (She knows I love her.)  She was like, “Don’t you want to be able to decorate the nursery!?!?!?  If you don’t find out, you’ll have to use yellow or something.”  (yes, I know that’s yuck.)

But I bought crib bedding BEFORE I even got married.  I’m serious, y’all.  I remember where I was the moment I saw this bedding online.  Remember when toile was REALLY popular?  Well, for some reason, that’s the print I wanted for my future baby.  So, I looked and looked and found this one that I just fell in love with…

I mean, who does that?  Who buys nursery bedding when they are engaged and not even near being pregnant?

This girl did.  Because I was already broody.  And because I KNEW I wasn’t going to find out and this was totally gender neutral and beautiful.

Well, Waverley worked her magic on me and it took pretty much nothing for me to tell Rooster that I wanted to find out.  He was excited, too, because he already thought that not knowing would be crazy.

SO, we had an ultrasound when I was about half way, and we found out we were having a girl.  I was SO excited because that’s all I wanted!  But then, the expensive Topsy Turvy Circus Toile bedding just wasn’t doing it for me anymore.  I HAD to have new bedding that screamed GIRL.

I told Rooster and I think he wished I had followed my heart from the very beginning.  I don’t think he was a big fan of Waverley anymore, either.  (just kidding, Wave)

So we had a girl and I was pregnant again a year later and I knew that I was having another girl.  I was so certain, that I knew it really didn’t matter if we found out or not–but we found out anyway.  And so it was confirmed that I was  indeed having another girl.

And I had to buy new bedding for her, too.

So, two times now, I’ve found out the gender of our baby after wanting for it to be a surprise for umpteen years.  But I was determined that this would be the last time.

I got pregnant again a couple of years later and I decided I wasn’t even going to talk to Waverley for the next 9 months.  Just kidding.  I did talk to her, but I didn’t let her hypnotize me this time.  I was dead set on letting this baby be a surprise.

And this time, I was going to use my Topsy Turvy Circus Toile bedding.

So, we went to the ultrasound and covered our eyes when we were told.  We left the office and I was so excited that I did what I always wanted to do.

BEST DECISION EVER.  If you’ve ever been surprised on delivery day, you know what I’m talking about, but if you haven’t, you just can’t understand the excitement I felt the entire 9 months…especially when I was really close to my due date.

The way I look at it, finding out before is like finding your Christmas presents before Christmas morning.  (I did that one time, so I know what I’m talking about.)  If you know what you’re getting, opening up the present really isn’t that fun.  I mean, you LOVE your gift because you had been asking for it all year long, and you wouldn’t love it any more had you not known what it was, but the experience was kind of…not super great.

That’s really how it is when you’re pregnant and you know if you’re having a boy or a girl.  The moment that baby boy or girl pops out, you are elated!  But, you knew all along what you were getting for Christmas.  See what I mean?

Imagine being in labor and then hearing that you’re 10 cm….time to push!  And let’s just say that you know you’re having a girl.  You do all the work and the head is out…one more push, and the baby is here!  The doctor says, “Here she is!”  Very exciting!  Your baby girl is finally here!!

But now, imagine this.  You are in labor and you hear that you’re 10 cm…time to push!  You have absolutely no idea if the baby you are about to meet is a boy or a girl.  The level of excitement goes up about 10 notches.  You do all the work and the head is out–you’ve just taken off the bow of your most precious gift ever ….one more push and you’ll finally know what that huge gift that read, “DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS” is. The doctor says, “Okay,….one more push………………” The baby comes out and everyone in the entire room is holding their breath in anticipation as he says,  “IT’S A BOY!”  You have to admit that that sounds just a little more exciting.

I know, I know….the nursery.  The baby shower.  You want the room to be amazing and finished for your baby when they come home from the hospital!  But, aren’t they going to sleep in your room for the first couple of months anyway?  There’s plenty of time to order bedding and paint a room.  Just have all the furniture bought and you could even paint the room an awesome Joanna Gaines color that would be perfect for any bedding.  But the baby shower?  The clothes.  You don’t want green and yellow stuff.  Well, have a baby shower, but have whoever throws it for you assign each invitee a gender to buy for and for them to save the receipt.  OR have a  diapers, wipes, and gift cards only shower.  Your family and friends won’t think it’s rude…it’s completely a smart thing to do if you don’t know your baby’s gender.  Duh. You can then go shopping with your mom or husband and get a handful of sweet little pale blue outfits to use if you have a boy, and sweet pink outfits you can use if you have a girl.  Keep the receipts and ask your mother or mother-in-law to return them for you after the baby is born.  Genius.

If you REALLY want to have a gender reveal party, have one!  Just have yellow or green balloons or something.  I know it won’t be exciting, but it’s a great excuse to throw a party.

When someone I know is pregnant, I always encourage them not to find out.  Most of the time, they absolutely think I’m crazy.  But I have had three friends who waited after hearing me go on and on about it.  After they had their baby, all three of them said they wished they had never found out with their other children because of how they felt and that they would never find out again.  The pregnancies feel totally different.  You really should try it.  I promise that it’s oh, SO worth the wait.
